Sherwood Warriors def. Blake Bengals 3-0 (25-16, 25-7, 25-6)
November 9, 2011
Those who are familiar with Maryland high school girls’ volleyball know Sherwood (16-0) has a prolific outside hitter. But tonight the Warriors’ defense outshined All-Met outside hitter and University of Florida recruit Alex Holston. Led by outside hitter Megan Hewitt (12 digs, 5 kills) and libero Sydney West (10 digs), Sherwood held the Blake Bengals (11-7) to only 29 points over three sets.
“Our defense was spectacular. We have a great front line and a lot of different attacking and blocking options,” said head coach Brian McCarty. “We talk a lot about running our system defensively and at the net the blockers took care of their assignments and the defensive players took care of their assignments. Tonight you just saw all of it working on the same page.”
The Bengals registered zero aces and only 9 kills over the course of the game. Outside hitter Franchesca Kuhney (9 digs, 7 kills) and libero Tara Mitchell (10 digs) led the fight against the top-ranked Warriors, winners of 35-straight matches. The reigning State Champions were paced offensively by Holston (12 kills, 5 aces) and Morgan McAlpin (4 kills, 4 aces). Dominique Parker chipped in 2 kills as well.
“We’ve been working a lot lately about getting our timing down about attack and I thought tonight [McAplin and Parker] did a great job of not just hitting the ball hard, but mixing up their shots—cutting left, cutting right, finding whatever holes in the defense they could,” McCarty said.
Sherwood has been the prohibitive favorite since winning last year’s 4A State Championship against Thomas Johnson. They will advance to play the winner of Dulaney-Catonsville on November 11.
