Phil Pressey’s star-studded preseason got brighter Thursday.
The junior guard of the No. 15 Missouri men’s basketball team was named to the John Wooden Award watch list comprised of 50 returning student athletes viewed by national media to be in contention for NCAA basketball’s highest honor.
Pressey has already been named the Southeastern Conference’s preseason player of the year, preseason All-American and conference first-team.
Senior forward and Connecticut transfer Alex Oriakhi, who was formerly an AAU teammate with Pressey, was named to the watch list in 2011 while still with the Huskies. Transfers are not eligible for the award.
This season marks the fourth consecutive year Missouri landed a player on the Wooden watch list. Marcus Denmon held a spot for the Tigers last year while Kim English made the list in 2010. JT Tiller made the preseason list to begin the 2009 season.
Missouri opens its season at 4 p.m. on Saturday against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville at Mizzou Arena.
